What is
Roller Derby?

Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of fifteen skaters. Games (or bouts) take place on a flat, oval-shaped track and consist of a series of short intervals (jams) in which five members from both teams skate in a counter-clockwise direction. A bout consists of two 30-minute periods, with a 10-15 minute half-time.

The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA) is the international governing body of women’s flat track roller derby and sets the international standards for rules under which we play.

How is it played?

Teams designate a "Jammer" (indicated by a star on their helmet) and four blockers per jam. The Jammer scores points by lapping members of the opposing team. The Blockers' goal is to enable their jammer to score points, while also hindering the opposing jammer, effectively playing an offensive and defensive role simultaneously.

Skaters can block opponents with their hips, rear, shoulders, and chest. Additionally, skaters may not trip, elbow, or otherwise make contact with others in an unsafe way. Whilst the sport can appear quite chaotic, a heavy emphasis is placed on safe and controlled gameplay.
